Year 5

'WINDS OF CHANGE'

What can we learn from our ancestors?

Welcome to 2025 and the Spring term. Year 5 will begin to unearth the legacy of the

Shang Dynasty of Ancient China and raise questions about evolution.

See our curriculum letter and poster below for full details:

RE: As part of our class' recent study into Judaism, we had a visit from a faith speaker to give a personal insight to what it is like being Jewish in Britain; traditions, rules, routines, the role of the synagogue and the importance of the Torah.

Widening Horizons - Market Hall, Devonport. Our latest trip was hosted by Real Ideas and took us on a tour of the magnificent Market Hall, giving an insight to its history, previous and current uses. Furthermore, the class was treated to a series of short films and 3D experiences with the 360 degree immersive cinema.

PE: Tai-Chi - Linking to our Winds of Change theme, this term, Year 5 have collaboratively been exploring the relaxing and meditational martial art movements of Tai Chi. Alongside which, they have learned how to control their breathing and disciplines of balance.

Science: Following the completion of our Light unit, we finally took advantage of a rare sunny day to take our learning outside. This demonstrated the movements of the Sun and the change in shape and size of our shadows.

LITERACY ONLINE: Prior to our Digital Detox, Year 5 engaged in a fantastic interactive 'Authors Aloud' webinar with Author and TV personality TOM READ WILSON and his illustrator IAN MORRIS. After delving into the origins or weird and wonderful words from his publication 'Every Word Tells A Story', we were treated to an interactive lesson based on character building (of an ogre), which was followed by an amusing Q & A with our hosts. Amidst the thousands of school children watching online, our class and school got a mention for their contributions an whopping four times!

Widening Horizons: Foot Anstey Solicitors. This term, our class were invited to explore the various careers relating to Law at the Foot Anstey offices on Sutton Harbour. Our hosts provided three group activities, alongside some whole class identification tasks, to explore elements of law and finance that the firm provide on a daily basis. The children had the chance to interview several staff in order to identify their position and purpose within the company. Furthermore, they all were treated to a free buffet lunch!

BIKE-A-BILITY: Year 5 have recently explored their road safety training and collectively built upon their bike riding ability and confidence with the help of expert instructors (despite the rain).

ART: CHINESE BAMBOO BORDERS & PROVERBS DISPLAY (Our final designs - using ink on watercolour paper)

Chinese Bamboo Art progress. After practising our Chinese proverb calligraphy, our class experimented creating traditional bamboo borders using various tones of ink. Finally Year 5 created a composition on watercolour paper to combine the two.

ART- Chinese Proverbs: Our class have recently explored traditional Chinese Proverbs and have begun to interpret, sketch and paint these Chinese calligraphy symbols.

Welcome back to school ...and beyond.
Year 5 will embark on a learning journey this term under our Autumn topic theme named:
SMALL STEPS FOR MANKIND.

Through a diverse exploration across our curriculum, we shall examine the beauty of the solar system, the lives of significant pioneers or influential figures and some specific cultures, combined with a selection of key events in Earth's rich history, to consider the big question:
What can we learn from our past to guide our future?

ART: The Final Frontier - Here are Year 5's wonderful completed Space Porthole Views on recycled records - inspired by the work of David A. Hardy. These final masterpieces are now on display within the class and the corridor outside for all to see.

AUTUMN ASSEMBLY: Small steps for mankind - Year 5 celebrating their completed space porthole designs with the whole school alongside parents, families and carers.

Widening Horizons: Our latest educational trip into the world of work was with the Cattewater Harbour Commissioners down on the Barbican. Our class were given an exclusive insight into daily running of a busy harbour; including the many different job roles and goods that are imported and exported in and out of Plymouth. They were also treated to an excursion around Plymouth Sound and up the Tamar - a real highlight of the day...until the Thunder and Lightning storm descended.

Art Part 1: Our focus this term, linked to our topic themes, is the study of the artist David A. Hardy. Our class has been perfecting the method of drawing and shading spheres, progressing to using water colours to represent planets in Preparation for their own 'porthole view in space' compositions.

Widening Horizons: Year 5 recently experienced their first of many Widening Horizons' trips provided by Millfield's Inspired. Our class had an exclusive guided tour and look at the plans for the redevelopment of Plymouth City Centre, provided by Morgan Sindall construction. Aside from being given a wide range of facts and figures regarding the construction progress from our hosts, our children were given the opportunity to ask questions about the costs and different job roles involved, alongside collaboratively creating a layer of a Giant Bug Hotel.
