Welcome to the St. Andrew’s Maths Hub

“Maths is not the answer to a question; it is the journey you have taken to get there.”

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the St. Andrew's Maths page. Help at home is essential to support your child's learning; we like to think of our relationship as an equilateral triangle: teacher, parent and child all having equal responsibility to develop the child's confidence, resilience and success in Maths. Attached below is a PDF title 'Skills for fluency'. There is a brief explanation of what fluency is with guidelines for what your child should at least be able to do within each year group. Also attached is a parent workshop presentation.

However you feel about your own Maths capabilities, we would encourage you to provide a positive attitude towards Maths – one that promotes a love of challenge and works to reduce Maths anxiety. Regular practice is essential, especially retrieval of work that may have happened in previous years and months. To help, we have added a link below offering free resources that follow our scheme of work. If unsure of their current unit of learning, please ask your child's teacher. We would also encourage your child to access Mathletics weekly and TTRockstars daily (3 minutes) - every child in Year 2 to 6 will have a username and password for both applications. There are further links to a range of resources at the bottom of this page.

Thank you in advance for your support.

  • Academic Year 2026 2027

  • This year we will continue our celebration of the children's Maths learning in our Friday Celebration assemblies.
  • Mathletics certificates will be presented to Key Stage 1 children and TT Rock Stars certificates to KS2 (KS2 will receive Mathletics certificates in class).
  • There is also a TTRS class competition each week which rotates between % of active users, average speed, % accuracy, and, average correct answers per player. The winners are rewarded with extra outdoor play!
  • Each week, the top 5 active Mathletics users from each class are put into a 'hat'. At the end of the autumn term, four children from each class will be drawn out to join Mr. Line for an afternoon of indoor curling. Last year's event was thoroughly enjoyed!
  • In addition, the top 10 Mathletics users by the end of the Spring will also be invited to a picnic afternoon either in the staffroom or out in the Quad.
  • It is important to know how your children feel about Maths, so we carry out a survey each year across KS1 and KS2 to understand how they see themselves as maths learners. We use the information to evolve our provision.
  • Once again, the school is part of the local NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Maths) hub and our focus this year is to work on developing the school's provision of problem-solving in Maths – a common theme that many schools in the area will be working on together. We look forward to the year ahead and welcome any feedback, so please do not hesitate to get in touch should you have any queries.

Mr. Line's Lunchtime Maths Clubs

Autumn 1: Card club

Open to children in KS2. Children will learn a game that involves trying to get rid of all your cards by placing a higher number down; however, there are various magic cards and unseen cards, so you need to develop a good strategy!

Autumn 2: Games to develop core number sense

Open to children in KS1 who may lack confidence in the classroom. Children will play games to develop key number sense skills that the Year 1 and Year 2 teachers feel need development.

KS2 children who wish to continue playing cards independently can still attend.

KS2 Lunch Time Problem-Solving Club - developing spatial awareness through tangrams

2024 2025 Academic Year

This year will see the Maths lead begin an NPQ in Maths Leadership, continue participation in the local Maths Hub and introduce 'Go Green' certificates from TT Rockstars. Participation in the TT Rockstars MTC Hub and use of Heatmaps are also being used to help motivate pupils to improve the fluency of their times tables.

The priority is always quality-first teaching; however the school are committed to Maths interventions through pre-teach and post-lesson booster sessions in order to make sure pupils keep up and not catch up. There is a focus of the application of cognitive science, especially how prior knowledge, working memory and retrieval practice all play keys role in making sure knowledge and skills are retained within long term memory.

2023 2024 Academic Year

This academic year saw the school continue its participation with the Teaching for Mastery programme with CODE Maths Hub. The year-long programme saw St. Andrew's work with a range of other local schools to promote Maths Mastery through quality first teaching. A learning walk with the course lead proved very positive for the school, with excellent examples of stem sentences, questioning and mastery practices embedded throughout all year groups.

A Year 2 to Year 6 pupil survey was carried out with the results used to help the Maths Action Plan for the next academic year.
