Sports Premium and Funding

Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium is additional funding given to schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers. Pupils who are eligible for Free School Meals or have been eligible for Free School Meals during the previous six years, this is known as Ever 6, receive Pupil Premium funding, as do children whose Parents/Carers are in the Armed Forces. Children who have been Looked After for one day or more, were adopted from care, have a special guardianship order or a residence order receive Pupil Premium Plus funding.

The Government believes that the Pupil Premium is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) and their peers. Each individual school is held accountable for how they use their Pupil Premium allocation, in order that the funding is targeted towards those pupils who need it the most.

It is for the school to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent. Each school is responsible for monitoring both the use of the funding and the impact it is having upon relevant pupils. Measures are included in the performance tables that will capture the achievement of the pupils receiving Pupil Premium funding.

PE and Sports Premium Funding

From September 2013, the government allocated £450 million on improving physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This extra funding is allocated directly to primary schools.

Schools receive PE and Sport Premium Funding based on the number of pupils in Years 1 to 6.  In most cases, the amount received is determined by how many pupils at the school attract the funding using data from the January school census.

Schools must spend the funding to improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils but they are free to choose the best way of using the money.

For example, you can use your funding to:

  • hire specialist PE teachers
  • hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers
  • provide existing staff with teaching resources to help them teach PE and sport
  • support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs
  • run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • run sports activities with other schools.

The Senior Leadership Team and Governors evaluate Pupil Premium and PE & Sports Premium Funding spending and the impact upon attainment and progress of pupils. For more information and other fantastic examples and their impact, please see below our Pupil Premium and PE & Sports Premium Funding spending documents. Here at St Andrew's, PE and sport are a huge part of our whole school focus and ethos. We have combined some of the values from the Olympic legacy, with our whole school Christian values to provide us with an all encompassing ethos where PE and sport are included at the heart. Have a look at the 'Olympic Legacy' link at the bottom of this page for more information. Here at St Andrew's, we are extremely active, there is an abundance of sporting activities for the children to get involved in. We recognise the importance of healthy living and encourage children to participate in sports regularly through a wide range of clubs and two hours a week of high quality PE teaching. Throughout the school we work hard to develop all children's physical literacy to encourage them to embrace a active and healthy lifestyle.

Assemblies end with a  'Wake and Shake' routine to get the children's blood pumping and brains working! Children are encouraged to get involved in physical activity throughout the day; activities include a table tennis club, skipping, lunchtime football and our 'Fit and Fun' shed which provides children with sports equipment for an active lunchtime. After school, there is a wide range of sports clubs for the children to choose from including football, gymnastics and hockey.

Y6 Sports Leaders 2022 2023

At St Andrew's Primary School, we have our Year 6 Sports Leaders as part of our PE provision, who regularly meet to discuss any ideas regarding physical education. Sports leaders have an opportunity to share their own thoughts and opinions with the group and collectively agree on any decisions that are made.

Sports Leaders are trained at the beginning of the year to lead activities and games with younger children and are taught the important qualities that are needed when working with young people. Once they have become qualified and received their certificates, Sports Leaders can work with Key Stage 1 or 2 children during lunchtimes each week to lead games and ensure playtimes are inclusive for everyone and that no child is left alone with no one to play with. This role develops important values such a patience, friendship, compassion and kindness as well as building their confidence and communication skills throughout the year.

Sports Leaders help to organise and lead events such as Sports Day and give opinions on what they would like our PE and sport provision at St Andrew's Primary School to offer in the future.

Past Winners! We LOVE to celebrate success!
